Vidzemes University of Applied Sciences student earns the first place in Open Data Hackathon 2018

From 28th to 29th of September a marathon of Open Data Hackathon 2018 took place in Riga Radio and Television tower, that was organized by Investment and Development Agency of Latvia (LIAA) and Latvian Open Technology Association (LATA). Within 24 hours, 11 teams with 75 participants worked on ideas based on innovative use of open data in four directions: transport, culture, regions and tourism. The main prize - 1000 EUR from company „Tieto Latvia” was won by the CareQueue project team. The team created an app that would help process requests for a kindergarten in Riga, facilitate the presentation of related documents and inform about the availability of private kindergartens and nannies in the vicinity of the family home or workplace.

The author of the idea is a mom and a student of Vidzemes University of Applied Sciences, Aija Sadoviča, who developed a solution with her teammates - Artūru Oņiščenko, Jāni Baižu, Mārtiņu Bruņenieku, Rolandu Bondaru un Rolandu Kalvānu. In order to clarify the location and availability of all preschool institutions, four open data sets from Riga Municipality and Latvia's open data portal were used for the developed solution.
